FixBit.
With an increasing number of home improvement projects on the horizon, users need versatile tools to get jobs done. In this case study, I dive into user and market research to design an electric screwdriver that solves various issues. My concept, FixBit, focuses on users' needs, which are driven directly by key stakeholder research.
Market Research.
79% of homeowners tackle multiple home improvement projects annually, which shows the huge opportunity for home improvement-related tools.
Productivity is increased by 15% when using an electric vs manual screwdriver. How might we make this even more efficient for users?
The following 8 electric screwdrivers were categorized based on Power and Versatility. The two categories were then segmented between High and Low. Based on the products in the market, there is a significant opportunity for an electric screwdriver with high torque and versatility.
Biaxial Product Mapping.
User Interviews.
An informational interview was conducted to better understand the users' needs. The interviewee was asked questions about his experience with electric screwdrivers and tools in general. This information was compiled into a Biaxial Map that categorizes the findings into four main categories.
Design Criteria.
Based on 3 different research methods, a list of product insights was developed. The insights were then used to create design criteria for the ideation phase.
Concept Ideation.
After conducting user and market research, 5 key design criteria were identified. These design parameters were utilized in the concept ideation phase. Each concept focuses on a unique combination of the 5 design criteria.
Final Concept.
Out of 15 total concepts, 2 of them stuck out the most. Each of these concepts provided unique solutions for users. The first concept provides the user with a torque toggle knob while the second concept has a replaceable battery. Both of these concepts were combined to create the final concept on the right.
Introducing FixBit.
FixBit is a compact electric screwdriver. With a replaceable batter and LED screen, this product stretches the limits of the future of hand tools.
